Cheetah Marketing was a UnitedKingdom-based company that produced electronic music-relatedhardware products and software for home computer systems during the1980s. They later changed their name to Cheetah InternationalLtd.
Based in Cardiff, Cheetah was run by two brothers, Howard andMichael Jacobson, but owned by Cannon Street Investments. Thecompany was closed in 1993 when the UK recession badly hit theshare price of its owners. After this Chris Wright and Nick Owen bought themusic products division and formed Soundscape DigitalTechnology Ltd. The joysticks and other computer peripheralproducts division went to another company in the Cannon Streetgroup.
Products
The company originally produced joysticks for the Commodore 64 and Sinclair ZX Spectrum computers and laterbranched out into music peripherals and stand-alone musicalequipment for price conscious home users.
Among their offerings were the SpecDrum (a sample-based drum machine), a soundsampler, a MIDI interface and a range of music keyboards.
Roland PC-200 MKII 49-Key MIDI Keyboard Controller. For sale is my Cheetah Master Series 7P 88-key weighted controller keyboard (circa 1989). Manufactured by now-defunct Cheetah International Ltd founded by Chris Wright (who later founded Novation) out of Cardiff, Wales, UK.
Joysticks and peripherals included the Cheetah 125, Cheetah 125Plus, Mach 1, and an infrared joypad.
Cheetah's range of music products expanded quickly during the1980s when they began to work with external designers. Among thesewere Chris Wright,who later founded Soundscape DigitalTechnology, Ian Jannaway, who later founded Novation Digital MusicSystems and MikeLynch, who later founded Autonomy Corporation.
Cheetah also distributed the Gamate handheld console in the UK.
